First Death by Autonomous Vehicle
On Sunday, March 18, at 10 pm the first person in history to be killed by an autonomous vehicle (by force of impact) occurred in Temple, Arizona. Uber's Volvo XC90 SUV was traveling at 38mph and operating under "autonomous mode" when it struck Elaine Herzberg who was walking her bike across the street. The victim was quickly transported to a hospital but later died due to her injuries. Although Uber's self-driving car had a human in the driver's seat (as required by state law at the time) she was unable to take back control of the vehicle fast enough to prevent the incident from happening.
